Mobile vs desktop conversion rates: closing the gap
Here’s the tension most stores live with: the majority of your traffic is on mobile, but mobile converts at a noticeably lower rate than desktop. Closing that gap is one of the biggest opportunities in ecommerce.
Why mobile converts lower
- Speed. Mobile networks and devices are slower; heavy pages punish mobile shoppers most.
- Fiddly checkout. Tiny fields, manual typing, and no autofill add friction on a phone.
- Smaller screens. Value props and CTAs that work on desktop get lost or pushed below the fold.
- Distraction. Mobile sessions are shorter and more interrupted.
How to close the gap
- Get fast on mobile first. Compress images, lazy-load, cut apps. Most speed problems hit mobile hardest — measure with LeakyPageSpeed.
- Add express pay. Apple Pay and Google Pay remove the worst part of mobile checkout — typing card details.
- Use a sticky add-to-cart bar so the CTA stays in reach as people scroll.
- Shrink the form. Address autocomplete and fewer fields matter more on a phone.
- Design CTAs for thumbs. Big, high-contrast, one primary action. Score them at LeakyCTA.
Measure both separately
Don’t look at a blended conversion rate — it hides the problem. Track mobile and desktop apart, and benchmark each. The free conversion rate calculator helps you see where you stand against your industry. For every leak (mobile speed included) in one score, see Revyfix.
